ACNE: Photo Dynamic Therapy with ALA

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) with ALA is used for more severe acne

What is PDT with ALA?

PDT combines a light source – either blue light, red light, or intense pulsed light (IPL™) – with the use of a topical photosensitizing solution (ALA) to target specific cells in the body.

The light source delivers specific wavelengths of intense light through very specific filters to the skin. Once delivered, the targeted tissue (sebaceous glands) absorbs the light’s energy causing damage to these oil glands.

Levulan® and Photodynamic Acne Therapy
Levulan® is commonly used in photodynamic acne therapy and has been shown to significantly improve mild to moderate acne. Levulan® photodynamic acne therapy is often an effective alternative for patients whose skin has become resistant to antibiotic treatments over time. PDT with blue light kills the P. acnes bacteria in your skin which causes acne as well as damaging oil glands.

What are the treatments and recovery like?

PDT is spaced two to three weeks apart. The number of treatments, treatment times and treatment intervals may vary depending on the condition being treated. A topical application of ALA solution is applied prior to your treatment. Then the area is exposed to either Blue Light, or IPL depending on the doctors recomendation.

PhotoDynamic therapy can cause mild to severe pain during treatments and mild erythema to severe redness and scabbing after treatment depending on how long the Levulan® Kerastick® is left on, how much light is used, and which light source is used to activate the ALA.
