ACTINIC KERATOSIS (EARLY SKIN CANCER): PDT with Levulan

What is Actinic Keratosis?
"Actinic" means "as a result of the sun" and "Keratosis" means "hardening of the skin". This type of lesion manifests itself many years after the skin has been damaged by the sun. An actinic keratosis is a scaly or crusty bump that forms on the skin surface. They are also called solar keratosis or pre-cancers. Dermatologists call them "AK's" for short. They range in size from as small as a pinhead to over 2cm. They may be light or dark, tan, pink, red, a combination of these, or the same color as one's skin. The scale or crust is horn-like, dry, and rough, and is often recognized easier by touch rather than sight. Occasionally they itch or produce a pricking or tender sensation, especially after being in the sun. They may disappear only to reappear later. Keratosis are most likely to appear on sun exposed areas: face, ears, bald scalp, neck, backs of hands and forearms, and lips. They may be flat or raised in appearance.

How does PDT with Levulan for Actinic Keratosis work?
PDT with Levulan is a non-surgical technique using Levulan, a topical photosensitizer of 20% Aminolevulinic Acid. During this advanced technique, Levulan is first applied to the area. It can be applied directly on particular lesions or to an entire area. Levulan will increase sun sensitivity for 48 hours after it is applied so it is important that patients protect treated areas from the sun during this time period. After 60 minutes, the area is then exposed to Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Blue Light
